HISTORY
Every year January 26th is celebrated as International Environmental Education Day, also known as World Environmental Education Day.
Observation of the day first gained momentum in 1972 with the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden.
This day was established by the United Nations and was first observed in 1975 to raise awareness about global environmental issues and promote sustainable practices.
WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION?
Environmental Education is not mere education of environment or its concerns but a dynamic and participatory process.
It aims to raise a sense of awareness in people to identify environmental problems of both general (global) and specific level and seeks to identify relationships and interactions that occur between the environment and the man.
GOAL
Its main goal is to identify environmental issues both globally and locally and to raise awareness about the need for participation in order to conserve and protect the environment, mitigating the various levels of impact caused by climate change.
It is important to understand the causes and effects of climate change, realise that sustainable development is the way to meet people’s current needs without compromising the capacity of future generations and understand the fact that protecting the environment means ensuring our own survival.
